How to open a dutch bank account

If you have a dutch bank account, you can give us permission for automated payments for the rent, which will save you a lot of time and worries.

Your first payment is the only payment you will transfer. The monthly costs for the remaining period of your stay will preferably be debited by means of a ‘direct debit’ (in Dutch: ‘automatische incasso’) from your Dutch bank account. You can Google how to do so, or go to this link: https://www.iamexpat.nl/expat-info/official-issues/banking-in-the-netherlands

You will need a ‘Burgerservicenummer (BSN). To get one, you will need to register at the municipality of Wageningen.: https://www.wageningen.nl/english/Registration_for_new_residents_BRP

  • For EU tenants:
According to our information, ‘Bunq’ is the only bank that facilitates a Dutch bank account in advance of your arrival in The Netherlands. They don’t require a Burgerservicenummer (BSN) at the moment you apply for a bank account. They only need your BSN within 90 days after your application. So you could already open a Dutch bank account in advance of your arrival in The Netherlands. https://www.bunq.com/nl/expats .

You can also open a Dutch bank account as soon as you arrive in The Netherlands.

  • For non-EU students:
According to our information it is not possible to open a Dutch bank account in advance of your arrival in The Netherlands, but you are required to do so as soon as you arrive. However, you can open a Dutch bank account as soon as you arrive in The Netherlands
